Pope Francis has appointed Nakuru Diocese Bishop Maurice Muhatia as the apostolic administrator of Kisumu Archdiocese.
Bishop Muhatia is expected to hold the office until a new Archbishop is appointed to replace Bishop Philip Anyolo who was moved to Nairobi Diocese.
"This is to ensure that there is no vacuum in the office as a new head is being sought,” Kisumu Archdiocese Vicar General Father Moses Omollo confirmed the appointment.
Bishop Anyolo who was installed as the Archbishop of the Kisumu Diocese in January 2019, takes over from Nairobi Auxillary Bishop David Kamau who was an apostolic administrator following the retirement of Cardinal John Njue in January after attaining the mandatory retirement age of 75.
Archbishop Anyolo was installed on Saturday in a ceremony presided over by Apostolic Nuncio to Kenya and South Sudan Archbishop Bert Van Megen.
