Maranda High School closed following dormitory inferno, 6 students arrested

A dormitory inferno in Maranda High school in Bondo, Siaya County on Sunday led to the closure of the school and the arrest of six students linked to the incident.

Siaya County Director of Education Nelson Sifuna confirmed the arrest, saying that when the fire broke out the six students were seen roaming around the dormitory.

He said, “After scrutinizing CCTV footage, there were six students seen moving around the dormitory, the six of them have been picked as suspects and handed over to security agencies for further interrogations.”

Sifuna also said that the school has since closed indefinitely to allow the school management to put up a temporary structure to accommodate the affected students.

“The management has sent students home so that they can work in a conducive environment to put up a temporary hostel and to ensure calmness in school," Sifuna added.

In a bid to resume within the shortest time possible, Maranda High school will call an emergency meeting to work on the necessary modalities.

Sifuna clarified that one of the four wings of the dormitory was the only one razed down, affecting the accommodation of 178 students out of the 400 who reside in the dormitory. No student was hurt in the incident.

He asserted, “This incident is a wake-up call to all heads of institutions in the county, they should be cautious of school security as they will be held accountable.”
