Police officer in Siaya burns himself to death inside station residence

September 02, 2021 0
An administration police officer in Siaya County died after allegedly setting himself ablaze inside his house on Thursday, September 2.

Adjacent houses that accommodate other officers attached to Siaya AP Camp were also razed down by the inferno.

According to reports, the officer's body was burnt beyond recognition. However, detectives suspect it was a suicide case.

About a week ago, the National Police Service Commission (NPSC) launched a scheme to address the escalating suicide and murder cases among police officers.

The focus of the scheme is depression, which is the main cause of the high cases of murder and suicide.

NPSC aims at helping officers undergo mental assessment before being put on a recovery programme.

According to NPSC chairperson, Eliud Kinuthia, a medical board to carry out the exercise is already in place.

Over 100,000 police officers will undergo mental tests with the aim of determining if they are fit to discharge their duties effectively.

More than 200 officers with mental-related illnesses are already being monitored in the pilot exercise.

The commission announced that it was assessing 104 officers to determine their mental fitness and 113 others are under medication for mental illness.

Fishermen discover mortar bombs in Lake Victoria while fishing

August 05, 2021 0
Several fishermen on a fishing expedition in Lake Victoria discovered six mortar bombs on Wednesday when they cast their fish nets in the lake.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) reported that the fishermen thought they had secured a huge catch only to find that a box containing the explosives was entangled with some fish they caught.

The DCI said, “The fishermen had cast their nets in the still waters of the world’s second largest fresh water lake, in the hope of a handsome catch.”

“Their net suddenly became heavy and voila! The fishermen beamed with excitement at the thought that they had caught a large Nile Perch locally known as Mbuta, that would fetch a handsome pay at the local fishmongers’ market.” The DCI added.

According to the authorities, the fishermen were shocked to discover the explosives when they made a concerted effort to lift the fish nets.

The DCI stated, “Shock of their lives came when they discovered that they had caught a heavy metallic box, instead of the anticipated Mbuta delicacy.”

Afraid the explosives would detonate, two fishermen reportedly jumped into the lake.

“Two fishermen who were shocked by the finding immediately opted to jump into the hippo infested waters, fearing that the bombs would go off,” the DCI report explains further.

The other three others took the unexpected discovery to the shore and reported the incident to the beach management chairman, Isaiah Ouko who escalated the matter to DCI detectives based at Mbita.

Alego-Usonga MP Samuel Atandi is facing pressure from the Kogelo community in Siaya and elders from South East Alego location who want him to apologise over his alleged involvement in the assault of a local chief.

The elders have also urged the Orange party to discipline him for misconduct.

The pressure follows the allegations pegged on the MP that he was accompanied by armed youths on Wednesday when he stormed Chief Ogutu Ojala's home and beat him almost to death.

The chief was rushed to hospital in critical condition that evening.

However, according to recorded a statement that Atandi recorded at Siaya police station over the matter, he denied any involvement in the incident,

He accused his political opponents of dragging his name into the matter.

Residents including elders and South East Alego ODM officials met on Saturday at Pap Nyadiel chief’s camp and resolved that those behind the attack must be brought to book.

According to Kogelo community chairman Vitalis Ondewe and the South East Alego location chairman Apina Makawuor, the MP will not be allowed to set foot in Kogelo if he fails to apologise.

Ondewe stated, “Chief Ogutu Ojala is a son of Kogelo and if Atandi does not apologise to JoKogelo, he should not step into our area and should even forget our votes.”

The former councillor in the former Siaya County Council said he was speaking on behalf of the elders from Alego-Usonga, adding that residents are now living in fear of being attacked.

South East Alego ODM chairman Apina Makawuor said the Alego-Usonga branch of the party will soon meet to discuss the legislator’s behaviour.

"I have been in contact with the branch chairman John Orwenjo Umidha who has agreed to call an urgent meeting to discuss the conduct of the MP. This is not the first time we have heard of such complaints,” he stated.

The elders urged the government to restore public confidence in the security machinery by bringing to book those who assaulted the chief.

They also urged ODM national leadership to step in and rein in the legislator who was elected on the party’s ticket.

Okoth Oluoko said, “A Member of Parliament should be a role model, not a person mesmerized by the trappings of power who uses a slight opportunity to beat and maim those who elected him.”

Siaya Governor Cornel Rasanga and county commissioner Michael Ole Tialal also termed the Wednesday incident criminal and uncalled for.
