Former FIFA President Sepe Blatter and ex-UEFA President Michel Platini have been charged with fraud by a Swiss court over illegally arranging a payment of $2.19 million, Swiss authorities said on Tuesday.
The two were indicted on Tuesday following a six-year probe into the payment that was authorized by Blatter from the world football governing body to Platini in 2011.
The two however in their defense argued that the payment was for backdated salary, a claim that Swiss authorities objected to.
" This payment damaged FIFA's assets and unlawfully enriched Platini."Office of the Attorney General of Switzerland ( OAG) said.
