Contempt case forces Ngilu to commits to settling doctors' salaries

Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu has committed to settle salaries owed to doctors to avoid imprisonment over contempt of court.

The county withheld salaries for more than thirty-five doctors who proceeded for further studies abroad and others within the country.

Through lawyer Henry Kurauka, the doctors went on to file a petition challenging the decision.

After summons to show cause, Ngilu appeared before Justice Monicah Mbaru of the Employment and Labour Relations Court at Nairobi’s Milimani Law Courts where she committed to pay the doctors their salaries.

In October, the court ordered the county settle the overdue salaries.

The court summons were prompted by Kurauka urging the court to discipline the governor and country officials including the Executive Committee Members for Health for acting contrary to court orders.

On October 5, Justice Mbaru gave the county until close of business the same day to confirm payment.

Compliance will be confirmed on December 10. When the matter will be mentioned.
