8 people killed, several others injured in crowd stampede at Texas music festival

A crowd surge on the opening night of rapper Travis Scott's Astroworld Festival in Houston, Texas left at least eight people dead and others injured.

According to emergency officials, when the crowd began to press towards the front of the stage at the festival, panic broke out.

Eight people died while eleven people were taken to hospitals in cardiac arrest. Some casualties were as young as 10 years old.

The outdoor event was graced by about 50,000 people.

Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo stated, "Our hearts are broken. People go to these events looking for a good time, a chance to unwind, to make memories - it's not the kind of event you go to where you expect to find out about fatalities."

In  a statement, Astroworld said that their hearts were with the "festival family... especially those we lost and their loved one," thanking local  emergency services for their response.

Houston Fire Chief Samuel Peña said the incident began around 21:15 on Friday (02:15 GMT Saturday).

He told reporters, "The crowd began to compress toward the front of the stage, and people began to panic."
