Union to employers: Allocate time for your employees to register as voters

The Communication Workers Union (COWU) has called on employers to allocate time for their employees to go and register as voters.

Commending the government's effort to get Kenyans registered as voters through IEBC's month-long drive, the union urged Kenyans to come out in large numbers to exercise their political right.

The union's Secretary General Benson Okwaro said, "Bad leaders are elected by those who fail to vote, when we come out and vote in large numbers we elect leaders of our choice."

Okwaro also called on the IEBC to put up registration centres in social places like churches and markets to ensure the process is convenient and easy for people.

The COWU Secretary-General expressed his disappointment in the low turn out of listers.

In the first week of registration, the IEBC registered less than 300,000 voters.

Okwaro added that there should be voter education particularly in rural areas where most of the people do not know that the ongoing voter registration exercise exists.

"The IEBC should reach out to its people through public announcement including advertisment on radios, TV, public announcement so that this people are aware of the exercise," said the COWU boss.

However, he urged Kenyans to observe Covid-19 rules during the ongoing voter registration exercise, emphasizing that people should observe distance, sanitize and wear masks even at the registration centres.

Okwaro also urged politicians to follow Covid-19 protocols during political gatherings.
