Singapore hits highest daily number of Covid-19 infections

The Ministry of Health of Singapore on Friday  recorded 2,909 new Covid-19 cases,on Friday, which is the highest number of daily infections in the city-state since the beginning of the pandemic.

The ministry said that as of Friday, 1,356 patients were in hospitals, 222 patients require oxygen supplementation and 34 patients are in the intensive care unit as of Friday, according to the ministry.

Furthermore, the country’s high vaccination rate resulted in 98.2% of the 31,057 infected individuals over the past 28 days having mild or no symptoms.

82% of the Singapore population had received two doses of the Covid-19 vaccine and 85% had received at least one dose as of Thursday. The vaccination rate is one of the highest in the world.

As part of its strategy to live with the virus, Singapore lifted its Covid-19 restrictions in August. Fully vaccinated people were allowed to dine in restaurants and to gather in groups of five.

However, the spreading of highly contagious Delta variant has forced the government to reimpose restrictions on Monday.

The new measures which will be re-evaluated every two weeks include limiting social gatherings to two people, making work-from-home the standard again, rather than having 50% of employees in the office, and suspending or moving classes online for students aged 12 and under.
