President Uhuru Kenyatta has hinted at the likelihood of the nationwide curfew being lifted.
The Head of State was addressing Karatina residents on Monday afternoon, on his way to Kirinyaga where this year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations will be held.
The curfew has persisted for over a year since the first COVID-19 case was reported locally and the residents urged him to lift it.
Responding to them, Uhuru said, “In the days to come, we will look at it, I’m working, and very soon, you will hear it, I do not want to speak too early but very soon.”
He also urged the residents to continue following the Covid-19 guidelines as per the Ministry of Health directive to be safe from the disease.
The President said, ”You need to also protect yourself from the disease, so that when we re-open there are no more deaths, and you will be free to live as you want.”
“I’m also happy to say that I’m very contented, you know why? Because, these days, you go home early and you are now multiplying, or who do you think will vote tomorrow if you don’t multiply?” he jokingly posed.
On October 4, Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe announced the daily curfew had been extended for a further 30 days, following the high COVID-19 positivity rate.
According to the Health Ministry, the vaccination numbers will determine the re-opening of the country.
Kenya's goal is to vaccinate some 10 million adults by December and a total of 27 million people.
