Nazizi makes musical comeback with new EP

Kenyan rapper Nazizi Hirj, popularly known as Nazizi, has a made a musical comeback with a new, extended play (EP) titled ‘Mashariki’ after a long time out of the spotlight.

Nazizi posted on her Instagram page, “Mashariki the EP is a project that I'm really proud of. I had to get out of my comfort zone for this one and tap into the Afro Naz. Better Day is probably the only song I got to rap on.”

The Bless My Room hitmaker had a hiatus in which she was raising her two children;  Tafari Firoz and Jezebel Adam.

In an interview in the Churchill Show on YouTube, Nazizi says her parents were quite liberal, and largely shaped her music career, adding that they always played music.

She said, “My first memories of music were at my dad’s parties. My father would have these big parties all the time, and he’d be playing reggae. The first time I had of Bob Marley and UB40, was from my dad’s parties."

The musician said she took a music break because she became a mother and barely had time for herself.

Nazizi also said that although people do not discuss it, mental health is important for artists.

“I started doing music at 15 years. After being in the industry for so long, you start feeling a certain way. All those years of constant pressure, started crumbling down on me when I gave birth to Tafari. So I thought, it’s time for me to have a break," she explained.

Nazizi was part of the hype Hiphop crew, the Necessary Noize and East African Reggea Bashment Crew.

Necessary Noize, which consisted of Nazizi, Kelvin Wyre and rapper Bamzigi, was formed in 2000.

In 2005, the group became East African Bashment crew after joining Uganda's Bebe Cool. However, Bamzigi had already left the group due to a dispute.
