Kipchoge nominated for World Athlete of the Year award

World marathon record holder Eliud Kipchoge is among 10 nominees for the Male Athlete of the Year award, World Athletic has announced.

Kipchoge who bagged the award in 2018 and 2019 missed out last year after a disappointing outing in the London Marathon where he finished eighth.

He however reclaimed his supremacy after retaining his title in the Tokyo Olympic Games and NN mission marathon.

Kipchoge will face nine other athletes for the award who include Uganadan Joshua Cheptegei and Sweden's pole vaulter Mondo Duplantis who won the award in 2020.

According to World Athletics, the nominees were selected by an international panel of athletics experts, comprising representatives from all six continental areas of the IAAF.

“As always, the World Athletics Awards will recognise athletes who have performed at the highest level across the year, taking into account not only the Olympic Games but the one-day meeting circuits. We do recognise that athletes in some parts of the world faced greater challenges than others in accessing international competition this year, which complicated the nomination process. However, we saw some impressive breakthroughs at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and we look forward to those athletes having more opportunities to shine next year, with five World Athletics Series events and a full schedule of one-day meetings on the calendar,' World Athletics President Sebastian Coe said.
