Two arrested for gang-raping a mentally challenged woman in Lamu

Detectives have arrested two men in Lamu for allegedly assaulting mentally handicapped woman sexually while posing as Good Samaritans.

According to a police report released on Wednesday by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), 45-year-old Shadrack Murimi Maina and 43-year-old Hiribae Kokane committed the heinous act in an abandoned house in the Sina Mbio area on Monday.

Reportedly, the suspects were accompanied by a Nyumba Kumi elder Samuel Ngumi when they were on patrol and they met the middle-aged woman preparing tea in a crime-prone area.

The police report said, “She had a loaf of bread. Fearing for her safety, Ngumi told the two men to watch over her as he went to seek help.”

However, when Ngumi returned, he found one of the suspects, Murimi, sexually assaulting the woman.

“However, Ngumi got a shock of his life when he returned to the spot and caught Murimi on the act of raping the intellectually disabled woman,” the police report further stated.

The police said that Kokane, the accomplice, fled the scene after having his turn.

“With the help of residents, Ngumi rescued the woman and alerted the police. Murimi and Kokane were swiftly arrested and locked up behind bars. They’ll face rape charges once our detectives finalize investigations,” the police said.
