Meru Senator Franklin Mithika Linturi was on Tuesday charged with attempting to rape a 36-year-old woman in Laikipia .
Appearing before Milimani Law Courts Senior Principal Magistrate Martha Nazusha, the legislator pleaded not guilty to two charges of attempted rape and committing an indecent act.
The prosecution alleged that on January 30, 2021 at Maiyan Villas Hotel in Nanyuki, Linturi attempted to sexually abuse the middle-aged woman.
“On January 30, 2021, at around the 3am at Maiyan Villas Hotel, Nanyuki in Laikipia East Sub-County in the Republic of Kenya, you (Linturi) intentionally touched the [woman] without her consent,” the charge sheet read in part.
He is further accused of committing an indecent act by intentionally touching the woman's breast and private parts without her consent.
The Prosecution led by State Prosecutor Evelyne Onaga however didn't object to the Senator being granted bond, but urged the court to release the Senator on condition that he should not interfere with the case.
The Senator was freed on a Sh 500,000 bond or Sh 200,000 cash bail.
Linturi's attempt to block his prosecution for the alleged offense flopped.
The case will be mentioned on October 26.
