Manchester City defender Mendy denied bail

Chester Crown Court on Wednesday denied Manchester City defender Benjamin Mendy bail, forcing him to remain in custody as he awaits a potential trial on rape and sexual assault charges.

According to British media, the 27-year-old had been reportedly charged with four counts of rape and one count of sexual assault and was remanded in custody last Friday after appearing at Chester Magistrates’ Court.

Reports indicate that Mendy's lawyer said that the player has denied the allegations and he has not yet formally entered a plea.

The City defender was absent during the bail hearing on Wednesday and is scheduled to appear at Chester Crown Court on Sept. 10.

According to Cheshire Constabulary, the charges against Mendy allegedly took place between October 2020 and August 2021.

Man City has since suspended the player who signed for the club from Monaco in 2017 for Sh7.9 billion and has won three Premier League titles during his time in Manchester.
