Female traffic cop dies while rescuing accident victims

A female police officer manning traffic along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway died Sunday morning, September 26 while rescuing accident victims.

Motorists who witnessed a Mercedes Benz truck overturn near a petrol station in Athi River, Machakos County, called the officer and her colleague to address the incident.

A police report filed at Kyumbi Police Station indicated that after midnight, the Mercedes Benz truck driver en route to Nairobi veered off his driving lane after losing control.

The truck rolled and overturned on the opposite side of the dual carriageway and spilt its contents in the middle of the highway.

A few minutes later, a Nissan Sunny driver, who was allegedly speeding, hit the heap of spilt contents, lost control and landed in a ditch in the centre of a road reserve.

Cautioning oncoming drivers, motorists who witnessed the double tragedy called emergency service providers.

Sadly, a Mazda Atenza driver also hit the spilt contents and veered off the road, hitting the female cop and her male colleague as they rushed to save the occupants of the first two crashed vehicles and to process the accident scene.

The police report stated, "The driver lost control and hit the corporal who died on the spot.”

The deceased’s body was taken Machakos Level 5 Hospital morgue, pending postmortem.

The three vehicles were towed to Kyumbi Police Station for inspection and processing.

The accident scene was sealed off by officers from the police station, a sub-base commander and detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigation as investigations into the incident commenced.
