Chiloba's CAK appointment triggers reactions from KOT

The appointment of Ezra Chiloba as the new Communications Authority of Kenya (CAK) Chief Executive has instigated various reactions from Kenyans on Twitter.

In a statement on Tuesday September 28, 2021, CAK Board chairperson Kembi Gitura said Chiloba would hold the position for a renewable term of four years.

The statement reads in part, “The appointment follows a competitive recruitment process to fill the position left vacant with the retirement of the former Director-General, Francis Wangusi.”

The position was being held by Mercy Wanjau in an acting capacity.

Chiloba held the same position at the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission but controversy marred his tenure following the ruling by the Supreme Court that the 2017 General elections held in August of that year was characterized by illegalities and irregularities.

According to Roselyn Akombe, Chiloba’s former colleague at the IEBC, the appointment is linked to the 2022 general elections.

She wrote on Twitter, "It has taken three years, but it is out in the open. The next crew to lead the 2022 injustice is ready for their rewards. Rest in Peace Electoral Justice #HappyNewYear2021."

In 2018, Chiloba was ousted from the IEBC after he was found culpable of accusations arising from an internal audit report on major procurement during the 2017 polls.

He fell out with the Commission Chairman Wafula Chebukati after the General Election as Chebukati suspended him to facilitate an audit of the expenditures.

Chebukati argued that the commission undertook a comprehensive audit of all the major procurements relating to the 2017 General Election and repeat poll, held on October 26, thus the move to suspend Chiloba was necessary.

However, to contest his suspension, Chiloba filed a case in court but chose to resign later.

Makau F. Muli wrote, "Ezra CHILOBA who was sacked by IEBC over meddling of elections now appointed as CAK boss!! Kenya is a NATION of PARADOXES."

"Former IEBC CEO Ezra Chiloba appointed Director-General of Communications Authority of Kenya for a 4-year term," Victor Otengo wrote.

He added, "Funny how this appointment comes nearly a year to 2022 General Election. It's only in Kenya where we recycle leaders who doesn't deserve to hold public office. Ezra Chiloba is the new Director General of CAK for the next 4 yrs."
