Safaricom has announced that it increased Skiza revenue share for artists and content creators and the move will be effective from July 1, 2021 and, applying to both music and non-music tones.
The move aims at benefiting over 20,000 artists as this population has been hit hardest by the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Artists and content-creators will enjoy increased earnings of 40% from all their Skiza tunes on the platform.
According to Safaricom Chief Executive Officer Peter Ndegwa, the move, which is part of the company's longterm strategy to support growth of the entertainment industry in Kenya through innovation, will boost the creative industry to support talent growth and sustainability.
Artists celebrated 25% excise duty exemption on Skiza tunes earnings at Dr. SK Macharia's home
in Gatanga.
From now on, they will receive 43 cents for each shilling earned, up from the previous 16 cents. They are however pushing for a further nine cents to hit the 52 per cent mark.
According to Dr. SK Macharia who led the event, if well managed, the music industry has the potential to generate greater benefits to the country as it is rich.
