Protesters block Mombasa-Nairobi Highway after government cuts water supply

The Mombasa - Nairobi Highway was Wednesday, August 11, blocked by angry residents along the highway after the government cut water supply in the area.

The protesters used jerricans and hand-carts to barricade the road in the Bangladesh area thereby causing a huge snarl-up that stretched for kilometers. Motorists, particularly truck drivers, were forced to wait for hours as police intervened.

Police were forced to lob teargas during the protests which occurred in the morning in order to disperse the protesters.

The government had earlier announced that several Nairobi and Mombasa city estates would experience water shortage for three days.

Areas affected in Nairobi include parts of Gitanga Road, Karen estate, Sohill City Estates and their environs, Amboseli Road, Sunset Estate, lower parts of Macharia Road and environs, Congo, and the whole of Kawangware 56 and 46.

Other affected areas are the entire Riruta Satellite, Kagondo, Muhuru Road, Upper Kabiria, Mithonge, Kamwanya, Kahuho Road, Ngina Road, Kikuyu Road, Waithaka Road and environs.

The report read in part, “This shut down will facilitate installation of suction mains and delivery headers for Dagoretti and Uthiru pumps at Kabete Pumping Station and commissioning of two new pumps to boost water from Kabete reservoirs to Uthiru Reservoir."

According to a notice in Mombasa, the Mzima pipeline broke down and was shut for repairs thereby causing acute water shortage for residents from the city's west side. The pipeline burst at Tsavo East National Park.

"We would like to inform our esteemed customers that there is a shutdown on the Mzima pipeline to facilitate repairs of a burst pipe section inside Tsavo East National Park. This will affect mostly the wider west mainland areas including Miritini, Mikindani, Jomvu, Magongo and Changamwe," warned Mombasa Water Supply and Sanitation Company Ltd (Mowassco),” the notice read.
