Kenya is planning to increase its horticulture exports to China with the aim of boosting its revenues.
According to CEO of Fresh Produce Consortium of Kenya Ojepat Okisegere, compared to traditional markets in Europe, China's huge consumer market can give the country better revenues.
The Ministry of Agriculture revealed that Kenya generated approximately 148 billion shillings (about 1.36 billion U.S. dollars) from horticulture exports in 2020.
Currently, the country exports frozen avocados and flowers to China, Okisegere said.
He added that expanding into new markets such as China will enable the industry to reduce overdependence on a single region
According to the CEO, Kenya aims at leveraging the well developed air and sea freight connections between Kenya and China to increase horticulture exports.
