Mombasa Women Empowerment Network chairperson Amina Abdalla has volunteered to take mentally ill patients to receive Covid-19 vaccines.
According to a Facebook post, the partnership saw 63 mentally ill patients get vaccinated in a vaccination drive event carried out in Changamwe.
The County Government of Mombasa has enlisted the network in the dissemination of the vaccines.
Mombasa County Commission Gilbert Kitiyo and the area chiefs graced the event, also taking the jabs. The total number of those vaccinated so far is 75.
The patients receive treatment of the jab at the center where Amina takes them after picking them from the street. After the treatment, they are handed over to their families.
Amina said, “We first counsel them before administering the first dose. Sadly, they do not have their national identification card so we cannot key in their details to show they have taken the dose.”
The Mombasa Women Empowerment Network advocates for mentally ill patients to receive love and care as majority are neglected by families and end up in the streets.
The group has partnered with the government and NGOs to fight stigmatization over mentally ill patients.
According to a report by the mental health taskforce, a common mental health disorder is amongst one in every ten people thereby translating to a huge mental health burden on the government.
