Nancy Chelangat won Kenya's first medal at the ongoing Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games when she came third in 1500m T11 on Monday at the Olympic stadium.
Chelangat won bronze after clicking 4:45:58 seconds behind South Africa's Louzanbe Coethe who took silver in a time of 4:40:96.
Chelangat 26, who hails from Kericho and competes in the T11 race of athletes with vision impairment hailed her guide Geoffrey Kiplangat who is also her elder brother for pushing her to the podium.
“I really did my best. My target was to win any medal and I am very happy to have won a bronze. It means a lot to me. It is actually him (Kiplangat) who pushed me with 200m to go, he told me to keep pushing and I really thank him for that,” said Chelangat who bagged silver five in the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Mexican Rodriguez Saavedra won the race by breaking the world record to set a new time of 4:37:40.
