Equity Bank has denied having banking relations with the Turkish investor Harun Aydin linked to Deputy President William Ruto who was recently deported from Kenya over allegations of being involved in money laundering.
The bank's Managing Director Gerald Warui while appearing before the National Assembly Committee on Finance and National Planning on Wednesday said that Aydin doesn't hold any account at the financial institution and has at no point ever secured a loan from the bank.
The inquiry by the Gladys Wanga led committee follows a proclamation by Deputy President Ruto who in an interview with a local television station said that through a single phone call to the bank management he helped the Turkish investor secure a Ksh 15 billion loan for the construction of Pharmaceutical company in Uganda that deals with Covid vaccines
" When I was in Uganda for my private business, President Museveni invited me to open a pharmaceutical company dealing with Covid vaccines.I was invited because the investor behind the firm had in 2019 came to my office seeking my help in acquiring a loan for advancing his business.I picked my phone and called Equity Bank and told them to assist the investor . This investor successfully secured the loan and went ahead to set up his company." Ruto said in an interview with Inooro TV.
