South Africa's ex- President Zuma loses bid to delay sentencing

Former South African President Jacob Zuma lost a court bid on Friday to overturn his arrest and subsequent sentencing for contempt of court, just a day after he surrendered to the authorities to start his jail term.

" The application is dismissed," Pietermaritzburg High Court Presiding Judge said.

The Constitutional Court last week sentenced Zuma to 15 months in prison for refusing to give evidence at an inquiry led by Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo over corruption that rocked his nine-year reign.

The Constitutional Court will however on Monday hear a petition from Zuma seeking to challenge his sentence.

In his appeal, Zuma has cited his frail state of health and risk of contracting coronavirus as conditions he relies on to have his sentence quashed.

Zuma is currently admitted to the Estcourt Correctional Center
