Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa attacks a contractor in a stand-off over Ksh.3.4 M

Kimilili Member of Parliament Didmus Wekesa Barasa on Friday attacked a contractor who allegedly attempted to bar him from commissioning the classes he had built because he was not paid.

Wekesa discovered that the contractor had locked the classes built by the National Government Constituency Development Fund ( NG-CDF)when he arrived at the Kamukuywa ward school to open them. It was from that point that drama ensued.

Stephen Masinde, popularly known as Steve Kay, and his colleague Ronald Graham Wafula, who had set up five classes at Baptist Lurare primary school in Kimilili constituency at a cost of 3.4 million, had asked the legislature to first pay them before commissioning the classes.

According to the two contractors, Mr Barasa has always been avoiding them despite their efforts to have him pay them.

Masinde said, “When we asked the MP to pay us he says that he does not pay contractors half of their money but he pays them full and he will do so and we shouldn’t be worried.”

“I have closed this classes because they cannot begin to operate without me being paid as they will be spoiled by children and he might end up refusing to pay me completely,” he added.

Masinde further claimed that the legislator use police officers to intimidate other contractors by opening and handing over projects undertaken by his office without giving money.

His colleague Wafula added that they had completed the classes to the required standard and that they were awaiting their   payment.

According to the school’s head teacher Wamechi Joel, since its inception in 1973, the school has had dilapidated and worn-out structures.

Wamechi expressed their satisfaction with the contractor’s work, adding that they are confident the new infrastructure will help students improve their performance.

The contractors have filed a report at the Kimilili police station.
