ICC lifts arrest warrant for EX- Ivorian First Lady Simone Gbagbo

The International Criminal Court ( ICC) has dropped its arrest warrant for Ivory Coast former First Lady Simone Gbagbo over post-election violence that left thousands of people killed in 2010-2011, according to a ruling delivered on Thursday.

"The chamber considers it appropriate to decide that the warrant of arrest for Simone Gbagbo shall cease to have effect,"

Simone Gbagbo faced charges of crimes against humanity.

Over 3000 people lost their lives in Ivory Coast following former President Laurent Gbagbo refusal to hand over power to Alassane Quattara who won 2010 elections.

Ms. Gbagbo was not handed over to the ICC but an Ivorian court sentenced her in 2015 to 20 years in prison for undermining the state security.

She was however released on a presidential amnesty on August 8, 2018.

In March the Hague based court acquitted Laurent Gbagbo of crimes against humanity and he returned to Ivory Coast after spending 10 years behind bars.
