Gov't extends curfew, ban public gathering

The government has extended the daily dusk to dawn curfew indefinitely, in a bid to curb coronavirus.

In the new containment  measures announced on Friday, the daily 7 pm - 4 am curfew currently in force in Lake Region Counties have been revised to 10 pm-4 am effective July 31st midnight.

Addressing the press at Harambee House, Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe stated that infections from the virulent delta variant have spread across the country, with the CS noting that Kiambu, Lamu, Nairobi, Kajiado, and Tana River have in the past weeks registered alarming spikes in infections.

During the briefing , CS Kagwe said the ban on public gatherings will be in force for a further 30 days, terming any kind of gathering as super spreaders of the virus.

"When you call a political gathering in a street where people are many is it super spreading. There is no point in carrying the rallies, then we have more deaths then we go to the funerals and then cause more deaths,” CS Kagwe said.

While places of worship have been allowed to open, the Ministry of Health has urged members of the public to adhere to the laid down protocols.

In the new containment measures, burials will be held 72 hours following the death confirmation with only 50 people allowed to attend.
