Kamworor pulls out of Olympics with ankle injury

Long-distance runner and 2019 New York marathon winner Geoffrey Kamworor has pulled out of Tokyo Olympics due to an ankle injury.

Kamworor who was hoping to end Kenya's 53-year Gold medal spell in the 10,000 m confirmed the news on his social media page.

"This week I had to make the tough decision to skip the Olympics. I'm feeling very fit and in great shape, but unfortunately a painful spot in my foot is preventing me from running 25 laps on spikes by next week,"

"I will build on the fitness I currently have and looking ahead towards great goals in the marathon in near future, see you soon."

The 28-year-old athlete won the championship last month running in a time of 27 minutes , 1.06 seconds to secure his Tokyo qualification.

His impressive performance signaled his return to top form following injuries last year from a motorcycle accident in Eldoret.

The former world half-marathon record holder won silver in 10,000 m at the world championship in Beijing in 2015 .
