British Police have arrested four people over using online platforms to racially abuse members of the England soccer team following the European Championship final on Sunday.
According to the police, Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka are the three Black players that were targeted with racist abuse on social media sites Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
Therefore, a team of specialists is examining the offensive comments posted.
The three targeted players missed penalties in the post penalty-shoot out that led to England's defeat by Italy at Wembley stadium in London.
The government has vowed to take action against social media companies if they do not remove offensive posts fast.
The racial abuse on the players has also been widely condemned.
The officer responsible for leading Britain’s policing response on soccer issues, Chief Constable Mark Roberts said, “We are working very closely with social media platforms, who are providing data we need to progress enquiries.”
“If we identify that you are behind this crime, we will track you down and you will face the serious consequences of your shameful actions,” he added.
The UK Football Policing Unit is currently leading a hate crime investigation with regard to racial abuse.
So far, four people have been arrested and dozens of data applications had been submitted to tech firms, police confirmed.
Although British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has promised to address online abuse, people have accused him and other ministers of hypocrisy for not condemning those who booed the players at the start of the tournament when they pointed out tendencies of racism.
According to the police, there were 897 football-related incidents and 264 arrests in the 24 hours around the final.
Fans at Wembley were unruly and large groups without tickets stormed past security.
