Herbal medicine vendor charged with scalding  pedestrian with corrosive substance

A herbal medicine vendor has been charged with scalding pedestrian’s face with a corrosive substance after the pedestrian declined to buy his concoctions at a city market.

Joel Njeru, who allegedly poured acid on the individual identified as Lucas Kamau, was arraigned at Kibera law courts for causing grievous harm.

Kamau is currently admitted at the PCEA Kikuyu mission hospital where he is battling blindness.

Reportedly, Njeru injured Kamau after causing a commotion at Kihumbuini market in Kangemi, Nairobi, jointly with others at large following Kamau's refusal to buy the concoction they offered him.

During the commotion, Njeru allegedly flashed the substance on the victim's face, thereby compromising his eyesight.

Members of the public rescued Kamau and rushed him to a nearby hospital before he was transferred to Kikuyu hospital.

They however handed Njeru over to officers at Kabete police station.

The suspect denied the charges before resident magistrate William Tulel.

Even though prosecution counsel Nancy Kerubo opposed his cash bail arguing that the victim is still in a serious condition, he was released on a surety bond of Sh500,000 with a surety of a similar amount.
