Uganda goes into lockdown as COVID-19 cases surge

Uganda has imposed stricter Covid-19 lockdown measures aimed at curbing a surge in coronavirus infections.

The measures announced late on Friday by President Yoweri Museveni include a ban on private and public transport within the country.

The ban on transportation however exempts cargo vehicles and ambulances ferrying essential workers and sick patients.

" All passenger vehicles are frozen, " he said.

Businesses in the busy Kampala downtown have also been ordered shut with a continuing dawn to dusk curfew still in force.

The measures will last for 42 days.

As of Friday, June 18th, Uganda had registered  68,779 infections and 584 deaths.
