A 63-year-old woman in Kisumu was arrested after 950 treated mosquito nets were found in her house in USAID estate in Kisumu.
According to police, the mosquito nets, which were meant for free distribution to fight malaria courtesy of the Global Fund which gives Kenya the nets free of charge, were stolen from Rabuor and Nyangande hospitals.
County police commander Samuel Anampiu says police officers from Obunga police post found 19 bales of the nets in the house while acting on a tip off.
According to the police boss, each bale contains 50 pieces of the nets and each sells at Ksh.400 totaling to Ksh.380,000.
He added that its highly likely that the nets are part of the 17,000 nets stolen from the two hospitals.
The suspect, Mary Awino Ohala, is being held for questioning and will be arraigned in court, Anampiu said.
At the beginning of this month, police arrested three people suspected to be behind the theft of the 17,000 mosquito bed nets in Nyangande and Rabuor hospitals.
Rabour sub-county hospital official Theresa Anyango Otieno, the acting officer in charge of net distribution at Nyang’ande area, Cynthia Akinyi and the person in-charge at Nyang’ande hospital, David Ouma were the three people arrested.
Hundreds of locals in Kisumu have been complaining over missing out on the nets meant to cushion them from malaria transmitting mosquitoes.
