Martha Koome sworn-in as Chief Justice of Kenya

Martha Koome has been sworn-in as the 15th Chief Justice of the Republic of Kenya.

The swearing-in ceremony was held at State House, Nairobi and was presided over by President Uhuru Kenyatta.


Koome is Kenya's first female Chief Justice.

She succeeds David Maraga who retired in February 2021.

Koome 61, has over 33 years of experience in the legal profession.

She trounced the other nine candidates to become the Head of Judiciary. None of the Supreme Court judges applied for the post.

Also sworn alongside Ladyship Koome was Justice William Ouko.

Justice Ouko is replacing Justice Jackton Ojwang Boma as a Judge of the Supreme Court.
