Former sports CS Rashid Echesa detained for one more day

Former Sports CS Rashid Echesa will spend one more day at Gigiri police station.

The politician appeared before a Kiambu court on Monday for slapping an IEBC official during voting at the by-election last week in Matungu, Kakamega County.

The court was requested by the prosecution to detain Echesa for seven days to allow for further investigations into the case but the politician's lawyer presented a rebuttal urging the court to reject the prosecution’s request.

Echesa’s lawyer said, “Don’t allow police to waste public resources returning to Mumias for further investigations when they already wasted public resources bringing Echesa to Nairobi.”

According to the former CS, his arrest was politically motivated. He was arrested by police in Kakamega on Friday, March 5.

A video went viral showing Echesa slapping an IEBC official at Bulonga Primary School polling station in Matungu on March 4.

The politician claimed that the security team under the instruction of a presiding officer, had evicted a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) agent  from the polling station in unclear circumstances.
