Court told that Sonko is mentally unfit to stand trial

A Nairobi court was told that a report issued by a doctor at Aga Khan hospital who examined former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko indicates that Sonko is mentally unfit to stand trial.

According to Magistrate Peter Ooko, the issue of the former governor being mentally unfit has not been captured in the report even two medical reports have pointed out that the politician has a bipolar condition.

Nevertheless, the court ordered that Sonko be examined by a psychiatrist at the Kenyatta National Hospital. The matter will be mentioned on March 12, 2021.

Sonko faced a major blow earlier after Anti-Corruption Court Chief Magistrate Douglas Ogoti declined his application to recuse himself from hearing one of his fraud cases.

On Thursday, the magistrate ruled that there was no evidence of bias and that instead of a recusal, Sonko should have filed an appeal.

“The applicant having been represented by able lawyers instead of filing an appeal opted for recusal, this is a conduct meant to threaten a judicial officer. I do find no evidence of bias and hereby dismiss the application for it has no merit, ” the magistrate ruled.

The hearing of the matter, which is in relation to Ksh.14 million graft, will continue on March 15, 2021.
