Uhuru refers to AfCFTA as a lifeline for African economies

President Uhuru Kenyatta has said some of the major economic challenges in African countries can be overcome with the success of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). 

The president reaffirmed Kenya's commitment to AfCFTA and rallied other African states to collaborate with the Secretariat of the agency to ensure that the continental trade arrangement becomes a success. 

Speaking at a meeting with AfCFTA's Secretary General Wamkele Mene at Sagana State Lodge in Nyeri County on Wednesday, Uhuru said that AfCFTA will be also be significant in accelerating continental integration efforts through trade. 

He congratulated Mene on his appointment as the first AfCFTA Secretary General and applauded him for steering the organization forward despite the disruptions brought about by the Covid-19 crisis.

Mene, a South African economist, briefed President Uhuru regarding the road map of AfCFTA. 

According to Mene, the road map prioritizes industrial development, women and the youth. He thanked Kenya for supporting him in his successful bid to lead the Pan-African institution.

Other leaders who attended the meeting were Foreign Affairs CS Raychelle Omamo, Trade CS Betty Maina and Head of Public Service Joseph Kinyua as well as Trade PS Johnson Weru.
