Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko is likely to spend the next one month in Kamiti Maximum Prisons if the prosecution's request to hold him over terror related charges, backed by a picture it produced, is granted by the court.
On Wednesday 3, 2021, the court learned from Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) that Sonko is linked to the financing of terrorism activities and is at an advanced stage of procuring arms and ammunition using a complex and sophisticated syndicate.
The picture that the prosecution produced showed the former governor and one of his private bodyguards dressed in military gear.
Security agents stated that the attire is associated with terrorist groups who pose a danger to the country's security and sovereignty.
In order to investigate this danger, they want Sonko to be held for 30 days.
Interestingly, Sonko, is not the only politician who has been pictured in military gear. During the 2017 Campaigns, Jubilee female politicians dressed in full military attire. Also, Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho has been pictured with the same attire.
Nevertheless, police claim that the former Nairobi Governor has a huge influence on social media which he aims to take advantage of and influence the intended attacks.
Sonko appeared before the Kahawa Courts on Wednesday evening for the magistrate to listen to the case.
He was later taken to Kamiti Maximum Prisons. The politician is now facing three cases concurrently as he was earlier at Milimani Courts for a corruption case.
