ICC convicts LRA commander Ongwen

The International Criminal Court (ICC)has convicted former Ugandan rebel commander Dominic Ongwen of war crimes.

Ongwen 'White Ant' a child soldier turned Lord's Resistant Army commander was convicted of 61 charges ranging from rape, torture, enslavement and murder.

The 45-year-old was charged for his role in the 2000s reign of the bloody campaign in northern Uganda.

" His guilt has been established beyond any reasonable doubt, " ICC Presiding Judge Bertram Schmitt said.

The court rejected the defence argument that Ongwen was also a victim of LRA's crimes as he had been abducted at a tender age.

" This case is about Dominic Ongwen as a responsible adult and commander of the LRA," the Court said.

According to the United Nations, the LRA killed more than 100,000 people and abducted 60,000 children.

Ongwen surrendered to the US special forces who were hunting for Joseph Kony in the Central African Republic in 2015
