President Uhuru Kenyatta has unanimously been elected the East African Community Chairperson.
President Kenyatta was elected during the 21st Ordinary Summit of EAC heads of state, which was convened by the outgoing Chair and Rwandan President Paul Kagame and was held virtually due to Covid-19 pandemic.
Kenyan Peter Mathuki was also appointed the new EAC Secretary-General.
Dr Mathuki replaces Burudi's Liberat Mfumukeko whose five-year term lapsed.
Mathuki who was once an EALA member previously served as the Executive Director of EAC Business Council.
At the same time, Burundi took over the role of the rapporteur of the summit
Both the chair and a rapporteur role are rotational on an annual basis.
The EAC is made up of six countries; Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda, Tanzania and South Sudan.
Dr Congo and Somalia have applied to join the East African Community.
