Sonko seeks protection of witnesses' in Kibicho case

Former Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko has asked  the Witness Protection Agency to place 13 key witnesses under the protection programme.

The witnesses are to back Sonko's claims regarding Interior PS Karanja Kibicho over their alleged involvement in promoting violence during the 2017 elections campaigns.

The sensitive nature of the case has seen the former governor seek the protection of the witnesses through his lawyer John Khaminwa.

"In view of the nature and sensitivity of the case, we request that as a matter of urgency, that our clients be placed under the Witness Protection Programme."read a  letter from Sonko's lawyer.

Kibicho had earlier obtained court orders barring Sonko from linking him to the chaos that occurred during the 2017 general elections.

According to the Interior PS, Sonko made the accusations with the intention of damaging his reputation and character.

Kibicho added that Sonko's false and libelous utterances against him began in 2017.

Justice Mbogholi Msagha issued 14 days order barring Sonko from making the statements until the case is heard on Thursday, February 11.

On Sunday, January 24, Sonko alleged he together with Kibicho and other state officials ,  they were involved in  stage-managing some of the chaos experienced in the country during the 2017 general elections to portray the ODM party in bad light.

Kibicho however responded by recording a statement with the DCI as he also threatened to sue the former Nairobi Governor for damaging his reputation.

The DCI also ordered Sonko to appear before its headquarters on Monday, February 8 and record his statement.
