Seven people died and two more are in coma after drinking methanol hand sanitizer at a party Tomtor village in the Yakutia region of Russia when the alcohol they had was over.
The incident which occurred on Thursday involved 41-year-old woman and two men aged 27 and 59 as the first three victims.
The other six were flown to regional capital Yakutsk by a medical evacuation aircraft.
The three who died on Friday were men aged 28, 32 and 69.
On Saturday another person whose age and sex has not been confirmed died. The other two are still in the ICU.
“Nine cases of poisoning with sanitiser have been registered, including seven that were fatal,"
said, the Federal public health watchdog Rospotrebnadzor reported,
“The poisoning took place as a result of drinking sanitiser, ” the regional state prosecutor confirmed.
The hand sanitizer which had been sold as a hand cleanser during the pandemic contained 69 per cent methanol.
Health officials warned locals against drinking the Russian-made antiseptic.
