Former DCI officer jailed for five years

Former Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officer Painito Ng'ang'a Bera was sentenced to five years in prison for abuse of office, kidnapping, and giving false information.
The alternative consequence was Sh 1.1 million .

The sentencing of the accused was made on Monday after the court found Painito guilty of the three offenses.

In a statement regarding the issue, DCI said, "Inspector Painito Bera, was charged with kidnapping, abuse of office and giving false information to a person employed in the public service."

DCI revealed that in 2014, the accused kidnapped two foreigners, Ethiopian nationals, drove them to the Ethiopian border and handed them to the Ethiopian Secret Service, yet they had been granted political asylum in Kenya.

In a protest letter to the then Inspector General Joseph Boinnet, the Human Rights Watch said the two foreigners were allegedly kidnapped on January 26, 2014, outside a popular restaurant in Nairobi.

Human Rights Watch Director Maria Burnett said, "At least one of them was a registered refugee with UNHCR. They were taken in a civilian vehicle by unknown men to Ethiopia and held in an unknown location near Addis Ababa for one year and four months and then released.”

Painito was facing the charges alongside three others namely Police Constable James Sipiti, Billow Ali and Hasaan Aden. However, the court acquitted the three according to section 215 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
