Lolani Kalu lands new job after plight

Former NTV journalist Lolani Kalu has landed a new job at TV47 a few weeks after he shared the story of his financial struggles and compelled many Kenyans to contribute funds for him to rejuvenate his passion.

The journalist's experience in the trade and his strong command of the Swahili language will enable him to be an outstanding regional reporter based at the TV47 Mombasa bureau according to the one-year contract he has with the local station.

Kalu will be covering the six counties in coast region.

The new TV47 staff said, told a local online publication, "I have signed a one-year deal with TV47, the opportunity came after fans saw me shooting my personal shows with one of the artists I was interviewing having TV47 branding. Fans called TV47 to find out if I had signed a deal with the station, and that prompted them to hand me a contract. I will be a coast regional reporter covering the six counties."

TV47 is a local broadcaster owned by the founder of Mount Kenya University (MKU) Prof. Simon Gicharu.

Kalu's breakthrough shows the power of social media. A social media post by Ahmed Mohamed highlighting the financial struggle that Kalu faces as a veteran journalist went viral after it was posted last month.

Kalu was one of the journalists laid off by the Nation Media Group (NMG) in a restructuring exercise.

He is popularly known for the Malimwengu news segment on NTV Swahili News.
