Governor Nanok cries foul over Ngaren museum project

Turkana Governor Josphat Nanok has expressed his disappointment over the switching of locations for the Ngaren Museum Project.

The Ksh8.2 billion museum project, commissioned by paleoanthropologist Dr. Richard Leakey was to be constructed in Turkana  but the location has been switched to Loodariak in Kajiado County.

The purpose is to enhance human evolution knowledge.

According to Nanok, there are corruption tendencies in the project linked to the switch.

The governor said, "This is a public asset mooted and was to be erected in Turkana County since 2016 and be co-owned (government, communities and private sector (Dr Leakey). Lots of work went into its early planning and funds were raised too, only for it to be diverted to private land. This is corruption."

Dr Leakey and his wife Maeve donated 300 acres on which the museum is set to be built in honour of their discovery of the best-preserved fossils of the ancient ancestors of man.

The structure of the museum is designed to be 80 meters tall, reflecting the ancient hand axes and other primitive tools.

Dr. Leakey outlined, "Ngaren museum represents a celebration of the beginning of all humanity, of life and its amazing biodiversity. It is dedicated to educating humankind on our shared past and tells the story of our common ancestry, our epic journey of evolution."

Daniel Libeskind, an architect known for building the iconic World Trade Center in New York, US developed the museum project design.

The museum is set to be constructed in 2020 with projections of readiness in 2026.

It will also be an avenue for conference rooms,  partner institutions, a restaurant, and a small amphitheatre for hosting events such as social, business, and family gatherings.
