Death of MCA forces colleagues to undergo Covid-19 test

The death of Huruma Ward MCA Peter Kiiru Chomba who reportedly succumbed to the Covid-19 virus means that all Uasin Gishu Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) will undergo mandatory Covid-19 testing. 

County Assembly Speaker David Kiplagat announced this measure, saying the MCAs will proceed to self-isolation after the mandatory tests. 

In a press conference on held on Sunday, October 18, Mr. Kiplagat revealed the autopsy results of Chomba's body indicated that he died of Covid-19. 

He added that all the MCAs must go on a 21-day compulsory leave.

Kiplagat said, "We wish to confirm to the public that we have received the autopsy results of the deceased, and we can confirm that he died from Covid-19, in lieu of this notice, all members of staff and county MCAs will undergo screening, the assembly’s premises will also remain closed for 21 days. "

There will also be no public viewing of Chomba’s body on Monday, the speaker clarified. 

Governor Jackson Mandago also spoke of people's laxity in the context Covid-19 guidelines, asserting that it is a major concern. 

Mr. Mandago said, "We have dropped guard, I have been around town; people do not wear masks and there is no social distancing. I have seen supermarkets that people are no longer washing hands, we need to go back to the measures that had reduced the infections." 

The virus infections are increasing daily at an alarming rate according to the Ministry of Health. 

Health experts also predict a second wave infection as per the recent statistics. 

According to the experts, the country’s fatality has risen to 825 after 12 deaths of people who succumbed to the virus were recorded on Saturday, October 17.
