The Kenya Medical Supplies Agency ( KEMSA ) procurement irregularities saw Kenyan taxpayers lose Ksh 2.3 billion, a report by Auditor General Nancy Gathungu has said.
The report tabled in the Senate on Wednesday revealed how KEMSA violated several laws leading to the loss of public and donor funds.
The report indicates that some of the companies awarded the multi-million contract were new in the business
This pointed a possible collusion between the companies and KEMSA officials who have been adversely mentioned in the scandal.
The Senate heard that companies awarded the tenders have been around for less than a year and also didn't have the necessary qualification to supply the medical equipment.
In her recommendation to the Senate, Ms Gathungu called on the government agencies to conduct probe to establish criminality in the procurement process and collusion between the agency and companies awarded the tender.
The Office of the Auditor-General also want KEMSA to withhold any further processing of COVID-19 related claims until an independent audit is conducted.
