Blow to Mudavadi as Senator Khaniri joins UDP

Vihiga Senator George Khaniri has ditched Musalia Mudavadi's Amani National Congress for the UDP.

Khaniri who has declared interest in Vihiga gubernatorial seat announced his move after leading a delegation of elected MCAs to join the Cyrus Jirongo led party on Wednesday.

At the same time, he rallied the communities in Western Kenya to support ODM leader Raila Odinga’s presidential bid, accusing Mudavadi and Mr Wetang’ula of failing to consult other leaders in their move to join DP Ruto further alleging that they acted out of their personal interests.

“As leaders of this community, we feel obliged to state on behalf of the majority of dissenting voices that our brothers acted out of their personal considerations,” Mr Khaniri

UDP is one of the political parties that on Saturday signed an agreement with the Azimio la Umoja coalition to back Raila Odinga’s bid in the August General Election.

Mr Khaniri who is one of the longest serving legislator said his decision to join UDP would not only allow him  pursue his political course but also guarantee the community a stake in national politics, including becoming part of the next government.

“We hereby announce our defection from our various parties to UDP and call upon all residents and aspirants of the various political outfits to embrace this new outfit and make it their home,”

Chavakali Boys closed indefinetly following student unrest

Chavakali Boys Secondary School in Vihiga has been closed indefinitely after students went on  rampage and destroyed properties of unknown value on Tuesday night.


Unrest in the national school began on Sunday evening when one of the school's dormitories was razed down.


According to the school, Principal John Kuira on Tuesday at around 10 pm the students are said to have further vandalized the administration block and two of the school's vehicle, a bus and a van.

Chavakali becomes the latest school to go on rampage this week in what's is seen as a growing number of secondary schools going on strike.

Prisoner shot dead while attempting to escape from police custody in Vihiga

A 26-year-old prisoner from Vihiga County was shot dead on Monday while attempting to escape from police custody.

Police said the man, identified as as Edwin Ndege, had been arrested for allegedly assaulting a police officer and he was to be arraigned at Hamisi law courts. 

He was shot while running away after attempting to break free. 

Ndege had been handcuffed alongside another suspect Benjamin Kidiahi.

A police report states, "While being prepared to be taken into a court holding cage, he slipped his hand through the handcuff and freed himself from his pair. As he started running away, alarm was raised and police pursued him. A police officer fired a warning shot which the deceased defied and continued running into the porous Hamisi forest.” 

According to police, the deceased was among eleven prisoners who were being escorted by six officers based at Serem Police Station.

Brother's battle over a piece of land leads to death

An elderly man, 64, has been arrested after allegedly stabbing to death his older brother, 78, following a quarrel over a parcel of land.

Eyewitnesses claimed that Geoffrey Khayega Mayungu stabbed his brother, James Tembete Khayega, after they squabbled over a piece of land left behind by their departed brother.

Their neighbours said that the younger man did not want to share the land with his elder brother after their kin died leaving no children behind.

The incident occurred at Kaptech in Hamisi, Vihiga County.

Hamisi OCPD, Johanna Chebii, who confirmed the incident urged Kenyans to adopt better conflict resolution mechanisms to avoid unnecessary deaths.

The body of the deceased was moved to a mortuary in Kaimosi while the murder suspect was taken to Serem Police Station awaiting arraignment.
