Westlands Member of Parliament Tim Wanyonyi will defend his seat in the August polls following consultations with ODM, the party has announced Sunday.
Speaking shortly after brokering a deal between Wanyonyi and his rival Mike Gumo, ODM director of elections and Suna East MP Junet Mohammed said Wanyonyi had the intentions of running for the city gubernatorial seat but after negotiations, it was decided that he defends his seat.
“But there was also our candidate Michael Gumo who participated in nomination on ODM ticket. The ODM party has consulted and Gumo has accepted to step down in favour of Wanyonyi,” he said.
He said Wanyonyi will be the party's candidate for the seat bringing to rest speculation of a fallout between the two competitors.
“Those who wanted a big fallout just know that we have sorted all this out and we will make sure that this seat will be maintained by ODM,” he said.
Wanyonyi embarked on campaigns to defend his seat days after he agreed to step down from the Nairobi Governor race in favour of Polycarp Igathe who is the sole Azimio La Umoja One Kenya candidate for the seat.
The deal between Wanyonyi and Gumo comes days after the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal nullified Wanyonyi's nominations citing ODM erred in revoking the nomination of Mr Gumo, who won in the primaries conducted last month on April 22, 2022 in which Mr Wanyonyi was not a contender in the primaries as he was seeking the gubernatorial ticket.
