Senator Mithika Linturi joins race for Meru governor

Meru Senator Mithika Linturi has officially declared his bid for the Meru gubernatorial seat in the August 9 general election.

Linturi announced his candidature on Sunday during a volleyball tournament at Maili Tatu Stadium and was flanked by several MPs who include Kathuri Murungi (South Imenti), Mugambi Rindikiri (Buuri), Kubai Kiringo (Igembe Central), John Mutunga (Tigania West) and Josphat Gichunge of Tigania East said they would rally behind him.

The lawmakers whom most are allied to DP Ruto's Kenya Kwanza Alliance said Linturi is the best bet for the job.

Linturi will be banking on Igembe votes where he hails to unseat Kiraitu who from the Imenti region which is the largest.

Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya who served as Meru's first county boss  is from the smaller Tigania region.

However will announcing candidture, Linturi maintained that he was not contesting because he enjoyed support from the Igembe region but he was gunning for the seat in order to spur development in the county.

"But I am not running because I am from Igembe. It's because I have a plan that will spur development in Meru. I want to strengthen devolution," Linturi said.

South Imenti MP Kathuri Murungi, a close ally of Senator Linturi will be seeking the senatorial seat.

Murungi who has served two terms as an MP said he decided not defend his seat  because he wants to facilitate development for Meru county.

"I consulted  with the people who want me to work for the development of Imenti, Tigania and Igembe (regions). I want to contribute more to the development of the entire Meru, not just Imenti South," said Murungi.
