President Uhuru Kenyatta on Sunday led Kenyans to mark 57th Jamhuri Day celebrations at the ultra-modern Uhuru Gardens.
At least 11,000 people were in attendance at the ceremony which mark's the day Kenya became a republic.
Unlike in the past, and in line with the Covid-19 containment protocols the celebrations were not held in the counties.
This year's ceremony saw the Head of State don the Kenya Army ceremonial outfit, Red Tunic that has in the past been worn by former Presidents Jomo Kenyatta and Daniel Arap Moi.
Several leaders from both the national and county governments graced the celebrations that will be President Uhuru Kenyatta's final Jamhuri Day celebrations as he is set to retire in August 2022.
Among notable leaders who graced today's celebration include Deputy President William Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga.
On Friday, Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i declared Monday a public holiday due to Jamhuri Day celebrations that fall on a Sunday, a non working day.
“In line with the provisions of Section 2 and 4 of the Public Holidays Act (Cap 110), it is hereby confirmed that 13th December 2021 will be a public holiday, by dint of Jamhuri Day falling on Sunday 12th December 2021." Matiang'i said
