South African President Cyril Ramaphosa tests positive for Covid-19

South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa has tested positive for coronavirus and he is receiving treatment for mild symptoms, the office of the President said on Monday.

Ramaphosa who is fully vaccinated started feeling unwell after leaving a state memorial service for former president FW de Klerk in Cape Town on Sunday.

He is now self-isolating in cape Town.

The 69-year-old leader has delegated all his responsibilities to Deputy President David Mabuza.

He is however "in good spirits" and is being monitored by the South African Military Health Service of the South African National Defence Force," the statement read in part 

"President Ramaphosa says his own infection serves as a caution to all people in the country to be vaccinated and remain vigilant against exposure. Vaccination remains the best protection against severe illness and hospitalization," the statement said

South Africa where the first Omicron variant was detected entered its fourth wave of the pandemic.

Ramaphosa's diagnosis comes just days after he returned from a trip in West Africa.
